Red Dog - longing

This is the first in a triptich of images relating to the interpretation of text brief i've just completed at uni (i got a 2:1 btw). The 3 images relate to the book Red Dog by Louis de Bernieres, and is about a dog that wanders the north-west of australia after his master dies in a motorbike accident.
The dog does not realise that his best friend is dead so wanders in an attempt to find him.

This image shows the dog's initial longing and confusion after john disappers, the man in the background is john and is alsmost like a mirage on the horizon. The birds are there because Red Dog chased the shadows of birds, and he is now chasing an equally unobtainable goal by searching for John
